How the foods you eat affect you and your growing baby

Healthy eating is important for you and your unborn baby. Good nutrition during pregnancy helps you:

  • Meet your growing nutritional needs during pregnancy
  • Nourish your growing and developing baby
  • Build tissues at your placenta, uterus and breasts
  • Prepare to breastfeed baby

Tips for eating well during those critical 9 months:

  • Consume sensible amounts of food and exercise regularly to maintain a steady rate of weight gain
  • Eat a wide variety of foods to get the benefit of different nutrients that each supplies
  • Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet
  • Increase your intake of milk, dairy products and other calcium-rich foods
  • Avoid eating raw and under-cooked meats and seafood
  • Limit your caffeine intake
  • Drink at least 8 glasses of fluids a day, especially water
  • Plan what to eat each day
  • Take supplements only when prescribed by your doctor

What you can do for common food issues

Women can experience a range of issues during pregnancy that affect how they eat. Here are some suggestions for ways to deal with these complaints. Consult your doctor if the problems persist.

  • While nauseated, eat low-fat, bland foods that can be digested easily (e.g. plain rice, toast, boiled potatoes, cereals, soft fruits, poached or boiled egg, and clear soups)
  • For relief, try taking some soda water, lemonade, ginger ale, popsicles or ice, hard sweets or foods that are both salty and sour (for example, a slightly ripe mango with a little salt, or guava with a little plum powder)
  • Take as much fluid as possible in between meals

    • Eating a few pieces of crackers before getting out of bed in the morning
    • Eating small, frequent meals through the day
    • Eating lightly seasoned foods and avoiding spicy, greasy and fried foods
